This
page is a collection of photographs from my camera rocket. The
rocket is a modified Binder Design Sentinel. In the payload section
it carries a small 35mm camera. The camera is deployed at apogee on
its own parachute and shoots up a whole roll of film as it descends to the
ground. A home made timer circuit was connected to the shutter
button and it triggered a new photo every three seconds during
descent. The whole thing is armed by a small leaf spring switch that
detects when the camera assembly has been deployed from the payload
bay. |

These two photos show my
Sentinel camera rocket as it was flown at the LDRS-17 launch at Bonneville
Salt Flats.
Aug. 6, 1998. |

LDRS-17 at Bonneville Salt
Flats as seen from about 1500 feet. If you look closely you can see a
vertical smoke trail of a rocket that was launched just after my camera
rocket. (There is also a shadow of the smoke trail on the ground.)
It is also possible to see the launch pads and even people walking around.

A view from another flight of my Sentinel
at LDRS-17. You can see a line in the salt where the ground is fairly
wet. People who tried to drive in that area usually got stuck!
By the way, the ground in these photos should really be a bright white. (It
is after all, SALT!) However, my camera does not allow for exposure
compensation, so its automatic exposure made the ground a sort of gray color
instead.

A little bit closer to the
ground at Black Rock, July 27, 1996. If you look closely you can see
the parachute and booster section of the rocket that deployed the camera.
The booster section is about 100 feet below the camera at this point and
still not down to ground level. There are also people visible. |

This is an old Tripoli Idaho launch
site at a place called Crater Rings near Mountain Home Idaho.
(Great name for a launch site!)
This is a view of the launch
area on a cold day in November 1999.

Same location as
photo above, but this one is down closer to the ground. The
launch area and the launch pads are now visible. |

showed up to launch rockets that day. |

This is another old Tripoli Idaho
launch site near Teapot Dome which is just north of Mountain Home Idaho. A
small gravel pit can be seen on the right side of the launch area. There is
just not much out there worth taking pictures of! (1996) |
